LOOK! HE IS COMING! (Pastor Jeff Wright October 4, 2015 Revelation 1:1-20)

The book of Revelation gets a really bad rap in the postmodern, post-Christendom world.  Revelation is not a spooky horror flick about the end of the world.  It is a reminder to Christians that God’s sphere of being and operation (Heaven) and our sphere (Earth) are not separated by a great gulf.  They meet and merge in all kinds of ways (cf. Tom Wright)  The early church believed that Jesus of Nazareth was, in person, the place where Heaven and Earth met.  In a world where the dominant political and social ideology demanded that the (Roman) Empire laid claim to being the nexus between Heaven and Earth, John the Divine Seer makes clear to the churches of western Turkey that Jesus, not Caesar, is the central figure of history.  Revelation then, is a book of letters to early churches full of holy irony.
